I was thrilled when today’s Spotlight was willing to share his stories and tell us a bit more about himself! This man always brings a smile to my family’s face when he’s around, and I know that if anyone else has met him, they would say the same! With that being said, I would like to introduce you all to Eric Price.
Eric is a Freeport High School alum, where he was very involved with athletics. He currently attends Northern Illinois University where he is pursuing a major in Corporate Communications and a minor in Business Administration. Eric has a wide range of hobbies from working out, to enjoying nature, to playing video games.
When I asked Eric what Black History Month meant to him he explained, “it means celebrating Black power, Black energy and Black excellence.” Eric also mentioned that his hero, Martin Luther King Jr., should be celebrated during Black History Month more than ever.
I asked Eric what he wishes people who are not Black would know. He said, “I want them to understand the importance of this month to Black people and how this month is the shortest month out of all twelve months. Also, how [Black History Month] is not taught with a lot of details or even valued in schools.”
I found Eric’s words to be very powerful, as I have never recognized that Black History Month occurs in the shortest month of the year. I think it’s very important that schools thoroughly educate their students on Black history during February, but not forget the role it should play year round! Eric, I am so thankful for you continuing to educate not only me, but those in our community as well. You are destined for greatness!
